Studying in Australia, which city should you choose? Most students tend to pick well-known cities like Melbourne, Sydney, or Brisbane. But did you know that Australia also has areas known as Regional Areas? These regions are another great option for international students. They are home to many leading universities and offer several advantages that support both study and work opportunities. Curious about the benefits of studying in a university located in a Regional Area in Australia? Let’s find out in this article.
What is Regional Area ?
Most areas in Australia outside major cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane are classified as “Designated Regional Areas” for migration purposes. Australia’s regional areas are divided into:
- Category 2 – Cities and Major Regional Centres
- Category 3 – Regional Centres and Other Regional Areas
- Areas outside Category 2 are classified under this category
Regional Areas: An Alternative Option for Studying in Australia
Why Study at a University in a Regional Area? Let’s Take a Look
1. Specialised Programmes Available
Regional areas are home to schools, vocational institutions (TAFE), English language centres, and many leading universities that offer a wide range of programmes, including specialised courses such as:
- Marine and Antarctic Science
- Marine Biology
- Maritime Management
- Medical & Dental Studies
- Chiropractic Science / Clinical Chiropractic
- Forensic Biology & Toxicology
- Veterinary Science
2. A Strong Sense of Community
University campuses in regional areas are typically smaller, allowing students to connect more easily with the local community. Students often live close to one another, making it easier to build friendships with locals, classmates, and senior students. Socialising, meeting up, and planning activities together becomes more convenient and accessible.
3. Relaxed Lifestyle
One of the most noticeable differences between regional areas and major cities is the more relaxed and less hectic atmosphere. Despite this, regional areas still offer a diverse and international environment, along with facilities and activities similar to major cities, such as:
- Healthcare services
- Fitness centres
- Entertainment venues
- Cinemas
- Cafés, bars, and restaurants
- Shopping centres

4. Experience the True Australian Lifestyle
Australia is well known for its stunning natural landscapes, from tropical rainforests, snow-capped mountains, white sandy beaches, and the Great Barrier Reef, to unique plants and diverse wildlife. If you study in major cities, seeing native animals like kangaroos, koalas, or wombats usually means visiting a zoo. However, in Regional Areas, you may have the chance to see these animals in their natural habitats, offering a completely different and more authentic experience. This is one of the key advantages of studying in regional areas, you can truly experience and connect with Australia’s natural environment.
5. Greater Opportunities to Stay in Australia After Graduation
One of the main reasons international students choose to study in regional areas is the extended post-study work opportunities compared to major cities.
- Under the Post-Study Work stream (Subclass 485 visa), which allows graduates to stay and work in Australia after completing higher education. Previously, graduates could stay 2–4 years, depending on their qualification.
- Under updated government policies (effective from 1 July 2023), the duration has been extended:
- Bachelor’s degree: up to 4 years (previously 2 years)
- Master’s degree: up to 5 years (previously 3 years)
- PhD: up to 6 years (previously 4 years)
- Increased Opportunity for Permanent Residency (PR)
- Studying in a regional area can also provide additional points (5 points) toward Permanent Residency (PR) in Australia.
