The Group of Eight (Go8) is made up of the 8 leading research universities in Australia, and these are also the highest ranked universities in Australia, and the ones that perform best in Global University rankings too with all 8 members in the top 100 World Universities in most rankings. Around 99% of research conducted by Go8 members is considered ‘World Class’ and they receive around 75% of Australian Government research funding through the Australian Competitive Grant (category 1). A ‘Group of Eight’ company was formed in 1999 to represent their interests and the market themselves as ‘Australia’s leading universities’

The members are distributed fairly evenly across the main cities in Australia with 2 in both Sydney and Melbourne, one in Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra.
The Go8 students are about 25% of all students in Australia, with a total student population of over 350,000. Of International students studying in Australia, about 1 in 3 is enrolled at a Go8 member, totaling over 100,000 students. Over half the doctors, dentists and vets in Australia are Group of Eight Graduates.
A 2018 report suggested the Go8 contributed $66 Billion dollars to the Australian economy each year, supporting over 50,000 jobs. The international student fees in 2018 were about $18 billion.
