Open Heart, Open House with the Australian National University!

When you think of the national universities of each country, which universities come to mind? For the UK, you might think of Oxford University or the University of Cambridge. For the USA, it could be Harvard University or MIT. But for Australia, do you know which one it is? 1, 2, 3, reveal! Australia’s national university is indeed the Australian National University (ANU), a university founded by Parliament and funded by the Australian government. The name says it all. But what makes this university the top university to be considered? Let’s find out why you should study at ANU!

1. The No. 1 National University in Canberra

Australian National University’s main campus is located in the capital city of Australia, Canberra. Many might mistakenly think it’s just a political city, but that’s not true! Canberra is surrounded by mountains, natural attractions, and even has a lake at its centre.

Besides the attractions, Canberra is a unique educational city with around 60,000 university students each year. Almost 40% of the city’s population holds a bachelor’s degree and 97% holds a year 12 certificate, the highest rate in all Australian cities. Moreover, Canberra ranks second in the world for quality of life according to the Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2024. It has very low crime rates and a lower cost of living compared to major cities like Melbourne and Sydney. The city is pollution-free and well-serviced by public transport. And the fact: Canberra hosts festivals almost all year round!

2. A Leading Global University in the Elite Group

Not only is ANU the top university in Canberra, but it is also part of the prestigious Group of Eight, which includes Australia’s top universities. All eight universities are ranked in the Top 100 globally according to QS World University Rankings 2025. ANU ranks 30th in the world and 4th in Australia.

3. Top 20 Global Programs

For those interested in politics, social sciences, development, philosophy, history, or geology, ANU is the right choice for you. These programs are globally ranked by QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024:

  • Politics: 1st in Australia and 8th in the world
  • Philosophy: 1st in Australia and 9th in the world
  • Development Studies: 1st in Australia and 10th in the world
  • Geography: 1st in Australia and 11th in the world
  • Earth and Marine Sciences: 1st in Australia and 12th in the world
  • History: 1st in Australia and 13th in the world
  • Social Policy and Administration: 1st in Australia and 14th in the world
  • Sociology: 19th in the world

For those interested in law, economics, accounting, or arts and literature, ANU’s programs are also outstanding, ranking in the Top 5 in Australia and the Top 50 globally.

4. Modern Teaching System and Facilities at ANU

Many may not know that ANU was ranked the most international university in Australia by Times Higher Education Rankings 2024. Among its 17,000 students, there are students from over 100 countries worldwide, and over 87% of the academic staff hold doctoral degrees! This means students will learn in-depth from professors and experts in each field. ANU emphasises small group learning, facilitating better interaction between students and professors.

The facilities focus on research tools, including one of the fastest supercomputers in Australia. For those who need to analyse large datasets in fields such as geology, technology, medicine, and others, this resource is available at the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI). Each campus also has multiple libraries specific to different fields, such as the Art & Music Library, Law Library, Hancock Library for Science and Technology, and Chifley Library for Arts, Business, and Sociology. There are also Moot Courts for law students, Siding Spring Observatory and Mount Stromlo Observatory for astronomy students, and Art & Design Studios for various arts disciplines including Glass, Ceramic, Printing, Painting, Media Arts, and Textiles, among others!

5. Great Student Life with Excellent Student Services

Worried about being lonely in Canberra? As mentioned, the city hosts festivals almost year-round! Popular festivals include the Canberra Balloon Spectacular, International Music Festival, Lights On The Lake, and National Multicultural Festival. There’s also the Chief Minister’s Student Welcome, where the Chief Minister of Australia personally welcomes new students with lots of fun activities. It’s a warm experience you won’t find anywhere else!

A highlight of ANU’s student services is the guaranteed accommodation for first-year students. ANU offers on-campus residences and private accommodations certified by the university, creating a community of over 6,500 students across more than 15 residences. There’s also a support team available 24/7 to assist with any issues.
