Have you ever finished high school with grades that weren’t quite what you hoped for? Maybe you did not have a clear plan for university at the time. Perhaps you were unsure what degree to study, chose subjects that did not suit your strengths, or simply did not focus on your studies as much as you should have. As a result, your grades may not meet the entry requirements for direct admission into an Australian university. Unfortunately, we cannot turn back time. However, that does not mean your dream of studying in Australia is over. The good news is that there is still another pathway available. In this article, One Education introduces Pathway Programmes, an alternative route that can help students progress into a bachelor’s degree in Australia.
What is a Pathway Programme?
A Pathway Programme is a preparatory course designed to help students meet university entry requirements. Students whose academic results do not meet direct entry requirements can complete a Pathway Programme to strengthen their academic foundation before progressing to university. Upon successful completion of the programme and achievement of the required grades, students can progress into an undergraduate degree. In simple terms, a Pathway Programme provides students with a second opportunity to gain entry into an Australian university when their original grades were not sufficient.

Types of Pathway Programmes
- English Language Programmes (ELICOS): Designed for students whose English language proficiency does not meet university entry requirements. These courses focus on developing academic English skills specifically for international students. Programme length varies depending on the student’s current English level.
- Foundation Studies: Suitable for students who have completed Year 11 or Year 12 and wish to strengthen their academic preparation before entering university. Foundation programmes are specifically designed for international students and offer subject streams aligned with future degree pathways.
- Diploma to Degree (Fast-Track): One of the most popular options due to its time and cost-saving benefits. Students complete a Diploma programme, which is generally equivalent to the first year of university, before progressing directly into the second year of a bachelor’s degree. Diploma programmes focus on practical skills and specialised knowledge while building a strong foundation in the chosen field of study.
Application Process
- Intake periods Most Pathway Programmes offer intakes in February, June, and October
- When should students apply? Students should ideally begin the application process approximately 5–6 months before the programme start date.
Examples of Pathway Providers and University Partners
Pathway Programmes may be delivered directly by a university or through an authorised partner institution appointed by the university. Students cannot choose any Pathway provider independently and then use the results to enter any university. Universities only recognise Pathway qualifications from approved providers. Therefore, it is important to check with the One Education team to confirm which Pathway provider is accepted by your chosen university.
- University-owned Colleges: Trinity College, Monash College, UQ College, UNSW College and UTS College
- Private Providers: Navitas, Kaplan, Study Group. These organisations partner with leading universities such as: University of Sydney, Deakin University and Curtin University
Pathway Programmes are generally more affordable than direct university tuition fees.
- Foundation Programmes: Annual tuition fees range from approximately AUD 25,000 to AUD 56,000 (Approximately THB 600,000 to THB 1,344,000)
- Diploma Programmes: Annual tuition fees range from approximately AUD 27,000 to AUD 55,000 (Approximately THB 648,000 to THB 1,320,000) Tuition fees vary depending on the college and programme.
*Tuition fees above are calculated using an exchange rate of AUD 1 = 24 THB as of May 2026.
