Please introduce yourself – what did you study before going to the UK?
Hello, before coming to the UK for my Master’s degree, I completed a Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering at Thammasat University.

Why did you choose to study in the UK?
After graduating, I worked as a Full Stack Developer intern, but I realised it was not the right path for me. I wanted to become a data scientist, so I moved into a Data Engineer role at another company. The reason I did not go straight into data science is that in Thailand, this field requires strong knowledge in three areas:

1. Statistics or Mathematics, to understand models and improve their accuracy

2. Business or domain expertise, to understand client needs and apply data effectively

3. Computer science, including programming, algorithms, and data structures

I could develop the third area through work experience, as I was already coding daily. However, the first and second areas require strong English skills, as most learning resources such as Coursera and Udemy are in English. Data science also involves explaining insights clearly, often in English. Without English proficiency, career growth in this field can be limited. With strong English skills, career progression is faster and salary growth is much better. Another key reason is that graduating from a UK university allows you to apply for a two-year post-study work visa, with significantly higher salary opportunities compared to Thailand.

Why did you choose this university and what impressed you during your studies?
I chose University of Essex for several reasons:

1. The university offers all the modules I was interested in, including Machine Learning, Robotics, Neural Networks and Deep Learning, Text Analytics, Computer Vision, Data Science and Decision Making, Computational Models in Economics and Finance, and Big Data for Computational Finance. Many other universities do not offer all of these subjects.

2. The university has a good ranking but requires a relatively lower IELTS score (6.0), which suited my level of English at the time.

3. The teaching approach is very flexible. Practical coding classes are held on campus with lecturers and researchers providing close support, while lectures were delivered online during the COVID period. I especially liked that all lectures included English subtitles.

Why did you choose this programme?
The programme at the University of Essex includes all the subjects I wanted to study, particularly in advanced areas like Deep Learning, Computer Vision, and Text Analytics, which are not always available at other universities.

How has this course helped your career after graduation?
This course has given me more career options. It has significantly improved my English skills and provided knowledge that I can directly apply to real-world work.

How did our service and team help you with your study abroad journey?
P’Ploy from One Education supported me in every aspect, from selecting universities (I applied to around 12 to 14 options), assisting with applications, reviewing documents in English, advising on IELTS requirements, checking passport and visa documents, arranging medical checks, helping find accommodation, and even giving advice on travel and student life. Without One Education, I would not have been able to manage everything on my own, as the process is extremely detailed and complex.

For anyone interested in studying in the UK, I would recommend gaining at least one to two years of work experience first, so you are clear about your interests. Then you can seek advice on suitable courses and universities based on your English level. The One Education team will guide you towards the most suitable path for your goals.
