Monash Nursing and Midwifery is also a founding member of the Psi Zeta at-Large chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI). Founded in 1922 by six nurses in the U.S., STTI promotes learning, knowledge, and professional development for nurses committed to making a global impact in healthcare.

Nurses are the backbone of healthcare systems, both nationally and globally. They represent the largest professional group in health, accounting for approximately 50% of all medical personnel worldwide. Globally, there are around 29 million nurses (World Health Organization, 2025). 

In Australia, as of 2020, there were approximately 450,000 registered nurses and midwives, making them the largest group of clinical professionals in the country (Australian Department of Health, 2020). 

Registered Nurses (RNs) in Australia earn an average of AUD 82,000 per year, which is an increase of about AUD 10,000 from the previous year. However, salaries can vary significantly depending on factors such as work experience, location (major cities, regional, or remote areas), qualifications and specialised skills, and seniority or job level (Health Times, 2023
