Planning to study in the UK? Before making such an important decision, it’s essential to separate facts from common misconceptions. Studying abroad is a major investment of time, money, and your future. Relying on hearsay or outdated assumptions can easily lead to misunderstandings. Many students believe that studying in the UK is extremely expensive, admissions are overly complicated, or life there is difficult. In reality, some of these claims are true but many are not.
In this article, the One Education team has compiled the most common myths about studying in the UK, along with the real facts you should know before deciding. Our goal is to help you see the full picture clearly and choose the path that truly suits you.
1. Myth: Studying in the UK is very expensive
Fact: The UK is home to hundreds of universities, each with different tuition fees. Depending on the university and programme, tuition can range from around £12,000 per year, up to higher-end programmes costing more. Universities with higher rankings often charge higher fees, but many excellent and affordable options, especially outside London, are significantly more budget-friendly and often more affordable than other popular study destinations.
2. Myth: UK universities only accept students with very high grades
Fact: Many UK universities have adjusted their entry requirements in recent years. Even some well-ranked institutions now accept students with more flexible academic profiles. There are plenty of options for students whose grades may not be perfect, although certain universities and competitive programmes still maintain higher academic standards.
3. Myth: Applying to UK universities is complicated
Fact: The application process for studying abroad is largely similar across countries and usually requires standard documents such as transcripts, personal statements, and references. With guidance from experienced consultants like the One Education team, the process becomes straightforward and manageable when you follow the recommended steps.

4. Myth: You must have an IELTS score before applying
Fact: Around 95% of UK universities allow students to apply without an IELTS score initially. You can submit your IELTS later to meet the offer conditions. In addition, many universities now offer IELTS waivers for students who have completed previous education in English-medium or international programmes.
5. Myth: GMAT is required to study in the UK
Fact: Most UK programmes do not require GMAT scores. GMAT is usually requested only for MBA programmes or specific business-related courses, and even then, not by every university.

6. Myth: Scholarships in the UK are hard to get
Fact: The UK offers a wide range of scholarships. Some are automatically awarded based on academic performance, while others require a separate application and personal statement. Automatic scholarships are quite common and often awarded as long as you meet the minimum grade requirements. While full (100%) scholarships are rare, partial scholarships ranging from £1,000 to 50% tuition reduction are very achievable.

7. Myth: Studying in the UK is so intense that you can’t enjoy life
Fact: Academic workload varies from person to person. Some students adapt quickly and require minimal revision, while others may need more study time. However, this does not mean you won’t have a life. With good time management, students can balance academics, social activities, and personal time effectively.
8. Myth: Graduating in the UK is extremely difficult
Fact: Graduation depends largely on commitment and responsibility, no matter where you study. Students who attend classes, complete assignments, and manage their time well are fully capable of graduating successfully whether in the UK or any other country.
9. Myth: It’s hard to find a part-time job in the UK
Fact: Finding part-time work in the UK is not difficult if you are open-minded about job roles. There are many opportunities, particularly in the service sector. Thai students are often well-received due to their polite manner and strong service mindset.
