Macquarie University is located in Sydney and is considered a relatively young university, with a history of around 50 years. As a modern and fast-developing institution, Macquarie has earned a place in the Top 1% of universities worldwide, according to the QS World University Rankings 2026. In addition, postgraduate students who graduate from Macquarie University have the highest employment rate in Sydney, based on the QILT Graduate Outcomes Survey 2024, highlighting the university’s strong industry connections and career outcomes.
Macquarie University is located about 15 kilometres from Sydney city centre. While some students may initially worry about commuting, travelling between the campus and the city is very convenient thanks to Sydney’s well-developed public transport system. One major advantage of being located outside the city centre is the spacious campus, which covers more than 126 hectares and includes academic buildings, faculties, student accommodation, and extensive green spaces. For students concerned about accommodation, Macquarie University also provides support services to help students find suitable housing, making campus life more comfortable and accessible.

The area surrounding Macquarie University is home to many leading global companies, such as Johnson & Johnson, Fujitsu, and Microsoft. These companies also have strong industry connections with the university. The district where the university is located is known as Macquarie Park, a major hub for industries and businesses.
As a result, students who wish to work part-time during their studies or secure employment after graduation benefit greatly from studying at Macquarie University. Many programmes also include work placement components, and the university actively supports students in finding relevant internship opportunities. Beyond its academic reputation, Macquarie University is also home to leading research centres such as the Australian Hearing Hub, Australia’s premier hearing research facility. The campus also features a private university-owned hospital with accredited medical programmes. In addition, there is a train station located directly on campus, providing excellent transport access. Just across the road from the station is a major shopping centre, ranked among the top in Sydney. All of this makes Macquarie University exceptionally well equipped to support student life, study, and career development.

In Australia, a standard undergraduate degree typically takes three years to complete. However, students who wish to study an additional discipline can choose a Double Degree, which usually adds one to two extra years, depending on the programme, and graduate with two qualifications. For example, students interested in both Business and International Relations (from the Faculty of Arts) can enrol in a Bachelor of Business + Bachelor of Arts, extending the study duration from three to four years and earning two degrees upon graduation. The same concept applies at the postgraduate level—students who have completed a related bachelor’s degree can progress to a master’s degree with one additional year, or choose a Double Master’s degree if they prefer a two-year programme for more in-depth and intensive study.
