How to Choose a Right City for Studying Abroad

How to Choose a Right City for Studying Abroad

One of the most common questions students ask our counsellors at One Education is, “Which university should I choose?” However, there is another question that is just as important: “Which city should I study in?” No matter how prestigious a university may be, if the city does not suit your lifestyle, budget, or long-term goals, your study abroad experience may not be as enjoyable as you expected. Over the years, we have helped many students plan their overseas education journeys. One thing we have noticed is that students often spend months researching universities but very little time learning about the city they will actually live in. This guide will help you choose a city that suits your needs and enjoy a more fulfilling study abroad experience.

When you study abroad, you will likely spend at least two to three years living in the same city, if not longer. The city you choose will influence many aspects of your daily life, including:

  • Cost of living
  • Part-time job opportunities
  • Climate and weather
  • Transportation and accessibility
  • Lifestyle and social activities
  • Networking and graduate employment opportunities

Choosing a city is not simply about location. It is about your overall quality of life while studying abroad.

Before researching cities, take some time to think about what kind of environment suits you best.

Ask yourself:

  • Do I prefer a busy or quiet environment?
  • Would I enjoy a large city or a medium-sized city?
  • Do I want easy access to shops, restaurants, and entertainment?
  • Do I prefer nature and outdoor activities or city life?

There is no right or wrong answer. Some students thrive in major cities such as Sydney or London because of the endless opportunities and vibrant atmosphere. Others find themselves much happier in quieter cities such as Adelaide, Newcastle, or Nottingham.

2. Consider Your Budget Realistically

Budget is one of the most important factors when choosing a study destination. Many students focus on tuition fees but forget that living expenses vary significantly between cities.

Higher Cost of Living Cities

More Affordable Student Cities

If budget is a key consideration, choosing a city with a lower cost of living could save hundreds of thousands of baht over the course of your studies.

Many international students hope to gain work experience while studying and potentially secure employment after graduation.

Large cities often provide advantages such as:

  • More employers
  • Greater internship opportunities
  • A wider range of part-time jobs
  • Larger professional networks

For example, Sydney is Australia’s leading business hub, while London is one of the world’s most important financial centres. In the UK, Manchester and Birmingham also offer strong employment markets across multiple industries. If gaining professional experience is part of your plan, these cities may be worth considering.

4. Do Not Overlook the Weather

Many students only realise they dislike a particular climate after they arrive. We always recommend researching weather conditions before making a decision.

Australia

  • Brisbane offers warm weather for most of the year.
  • Gold Coast provides a relaxed coastal lifestyle.
  • Melbourne is famous for having four seasons in one day.
  • Hobart tends to be cooler throughout the year.

United Kingdom

  • London generally has milder temperatures than northern cities.
  • Manchester and Newcastle are cooler and experience more rainfall.
  • Scotland can be significantly colder during winter months.

Weather may seem like a small detail, but it can have a major impact on your daily comfort and overall experience.

5. Choose a City That Supports Your Field of Study

Some cities are particularly strong in certain industries.

  • Business & Finance: London, Manchester, Sydney, Melbourne
  • Engineering & Technology: Birmingham, Bristol, Sydney, Brisbane
  • Creative Arts & Design: Melbourne, London, Manchester
  • Health Sciences: Adelaide, Brisbane, Newcastle

Studying in a city with strong industry connections can increase opportunities for internships, placements, networking, and future employment.

6. Learn from Students Who Have Lived There

University websites can provide useful information, but they don’t always reflect the full student experience. We recommend speaking with current students about the real cost of living, transportation, safety, part-time work opportunities, social life, and day-to-day student life. These insights often provide a more realistic picture than the images and marketing materials found on university websites.
