7 Reasons Why You Should Study in Sydney

When it comes to student cities, Sydney has it all: amazing beaches, iconic landmarks, a booming nightlife and a vibrant culture. But if you still need persuading, here are some of the reasons why Sydney is the place for you.

1. You’ll never get bored

There’s so much to do in Sydney! The city is packed full of attractions – you could take the Sydney City Museum Crawl, which takes you to the Australian Museum, the National Maritime Museum, the Art Gallery of NSW, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, to learn about Australia’s history. Or get out and enjoy the fresh air with a harbour cruise. If you’re more of an adrenaline junkie, try climbing the famous Harbour Bridge or riding the roller coasters at Luna Park. That’s not to mention the shopping – Sydney’s got it all, from local markets to malls and luxury outlets.

2. The Fantastic Climate

Sydney has the perfect climate – its hot summers and mild winters mean you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the city, rather than being trapped inside by the rain or the cold. It’s also working hard against climate change – with a plan to meet all of the city’s electricity and heating needs through renewable energy, Sydney aims to reduce carbon emissions by 70% by 2030.  The amazing weather will also give you plenty of time to enjoy the city.

3. The Amazing Beaches

Sydney’s beaches are talked about all around the world, and for good reason – they’re perfect for swimming, surfing, scuba-diving, or just chilling out. You can head down to the world-famous Bondi Beach or visit some of the more hidden gems like Gordon’s Bay. Wherever you choose, there’s a whole range of activities to enjoy in the sunshine, or you can opt for a more relaxing stroll around the beachside cafes.

4. The World-Class Study Options

Sydney is home to many globally ranked universities such as Macquarie University, UNSW Sydney*, the University of Sydney, and the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). On top of this, those looking to improve their English Language skills can enroll in top-quality courses specifically for international students.

* UNSW Sydney and the University of Sydney are members of the Group of Eight prestigious universities in Australia and are ranked in the Top 50 globally.

5. The Public Transport

Sydney’s extensive system of trains, trams, buses, and ferries make it easy to get around the city and to get away for a while into the mountains and the surrounding countryside. They run regularly and late into the night, and there are also plenty of bike-sharing schemes which make getting around the city a breeze.

6. The Great Employment Opportunities

One great thing about studying abroad in Australia is that your student visa automatically gives you a license to work up to 40 hours every two weeks during the term time and full-time during holidays. According to a recent announcement by the Australian government, this will increase to 48 hours every two weeks from 1st July 2023 onwards. There’s a lot of work to be found, too: Sydney is an economic powerhouse, and more than 40% of Australia’s Top 500 companies, 90% of international banks, 60% of information and communication and technology companies, and 50% of professional service firms have their global or regional headquarters in the city. In addition, Sydney’s universities run workplace-immersion programs to help international students get into the Australian workforce, and many organisations based in Sydney run student society meet-ups and events to give you plenty of opportunities for networking.

7. The Vibrant and Exciting Culture

Sydney is Australia’s most populated city, so it’s always full of energy and life. It’s also got a thriving cultural calendar – all year round, there are festivals and events to enjoy, like The Sydney Festival, the Royal Easter Show, and Sydney Mardis Gras, not to mention the spectacular New Year’s celebrations. It’s also one of Australia’s (and the World’s) most multicultural cities – the City of Sydney estimates that around 40.1% was born overseas, which just goes to show that Sydney is a place for everyone.
