When applying for undergraduate study in the UK, students typically submit their application through a centralised system called UCAS. While some universities may accept direct applications, most rely on UCAS. Not sure which universities use which system? Don’t worry—One Education is here to guide you every step of the way. But first, let’s take a closer look at how the UK university application system works.
What is UCAS?
UCAS, which stands for The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, is the centralized application service for universities and colleges in the UK.
Almost all undergraduate applications to UK universities are submitted through UCAS. It serves as a central platform that allows students to apply to multiple universities at once, making the process quicker and more efficient.
UCAS helps simplify the application journey by managing the submission of student applications to various universities and colleges. This reduces the complexity and hassle of sending individual applications to each university. It also enables universities to efficiently manage and select applicants without having to deal with separate applications from each student.
Important UCAS Application Timeline
There are three main UCAS deadlines each year for undergraduate applications:
- 15 January – Final deadline for most undergraduate course applications.
- 15 October – Deadline for applicants to Oxbridge (University of Oxford and University of Cambridge) or for courses in Medicine, Dentistry, or Veterinary Medicine.
- 30 June – Final deadline for all undergraduate applications. Any applications submitted after this date will be entered into the UCAS Clearing system.
Steps to Apply via UCAS
Students can apply to a maximum of five universities or courses through a single UCAS application. These can be five different universities or five different courses at the same university. For 2025 entry, the application fees are £22 for a single course and £28.50 for up to five course choices.

Tips from One Education for a Successful UCAS Application
- Be mindful of all key deadlines.
- Plan your course and university choices carefully.
- Prepare all required documents, including English proficiency test results and any other necessary materials.
- Write a strong Personal Statement – around 500 words. This is a crucial document explaining why you are a suitable candidate for the course and university. It’s your chance to highlight your personality, motivation, relevant experiences, and achievements.
- Secure a Reference Letter – This should be from a teacher or academic who knows your abilities and potential.
- Track your application status after submission in case the university requests further documents or responds with an offer.
If you happen to miss any steps or deadlines, don’t worry—there’s still a chance! You may be eligible to apply through UCAS Extra or UCAS Clearing. However, it’s highly recommended to stick to the main application timeline to maximize your chances of getting into your top-choice university.
What is UCAS Extra and When Can You Apply?
UCAS Extra is a service that allows students to add one more course choice to their application if:
- They did not receive any offers from the five universities they originally applied to, or
- They changed their minds about the courses or institutions they had previously selected.
- UCAS Extra runs from February to early July each year. You can use this option as long as it’s before 30 June and you haven’t accepted or declined any offers.
This process is free of charge, and if you still haven’t received any offers after the UCAS Extra period ends in July, you will then be eligible to enter the UCAS Clearing process.
What is UCAS Clearing and When Can You Apply?
UCAS Clearing is a process used by UK universities to fill available places in their undergraduate courses. Clearing typically starts in early July and continues until mid-October each year.
You are eligible for UCAS Clearing if one of the following applies:
- You applied after 30 June.
- Your exam results didn’t meet the conditions of your offers.
- You didn’t receive any offers, or you declined all offers received.
The UCAS application process is not as complicated as it may seem. With early preparation and the right guidance, students can confidently follow each step.
