Course: PhD (Music Therapy)
Institution: University of Melbourne
Why did you choose to study in Australia?
Globally, music therapy is still considered a relatively new profession and is currently in a stage of growth, unlike more established fields such as medicine, nursing, psychology, physiotherapy, teaching, and engineering. As a result, only a few countries have fully developed the field to the extent of offering doctoral-level education, and Australia is one of them. Music therapy has been recognised as a professional field in Australia for over 50 years. There is a professional association that accredits music therapists, and the profession is recognised by the government. In fact, individuals can receive government support for accessing music therapy services. This was the main reason I chose to study in Australia. That said, I believe Thailand will soon see significant development in this field as well. There is a growing number of qualified Thai music therapists who have completed their education abroad and are recognised by international professional bodies. Educational institutions in Thailand are beginning to offer music therapy programmes, and I have had the opportunity to contribute to the development of a music therapy programme at Chulalongkorn University. This international programme will provide comprehensive training across various approaches to music therapy. In the near future, Thailand may become a hub for music therapy education and practice, integrating knowledge from around the world, similar to Australia.
Why did you choose this course?
The PhD in Music Therapy at the University of Melbourne was both my first and only choice, as it aligns perfectly with my research interests and professional approach. My focus is on music therapy for older adults, particularly through the perspectives of rehabilitation medicine and the neuroscience of music. The programme is led by supervisors who are among the top experts in this field globally. In addition, the academic team is well known for innovation and novel approaches that integrate interdisciplinary knowledge. Their research includes applications of telehealth and virtual reality in music therapy, which aligns closely with my own work involving innovation, such as the use of artificial intelligence, telehealth, and pre-recorded interventions like podcasts.
Why did you choose this institute and what is your memorable experience at the institute?
The University of Melbourne provides an excellent environment and resources for producing high-quality research in music therapy. It is also highly connected to the global music therapy community, with a wide international network. The institution plays a leading role in organising international conferences, and academics from around the world regularly visit to teach and collaborate. In many ways, it serves as a global hub for music therapy. The university’s philosophy of an eclectic approach to training music therapists also strongly aligns with my own perspective. The academic environment is highly stimulating, supported by the people, facilities, and culture. The campus itself is very conducive to studying, with beautiful open spaces, greenery, and pleasant surroundings. It is easy to spend the whole day there reading and working, especially as the weather is comfortable.
What did you like the most about our service and your counsellor?
I first learned about One Education through a friend who was already studying abroad, and also through attending one of their information sessions. The team provided comprehensive support throughout the entire process. My role was mainly to prepare the required documents and complete the necessary examinations. The team handled the more time-consuming aspects, including coordination, accommodation arrangements, and visa applications. What impressed me most was the team’s attentiveness. They were always available to provide support whenever I had concerns. This level of care created a strong sense of reassurance throughout the entire application process, which is extremely important when preparing to study abroad.
