Course: BEng Petroleum Engineering
Institution: University of Leeds
Please tell us about yourself – what course and institute did you study before going to the UK?
Before coming to the UK, I completed my high school studies in New Zealand at Mountainview High School.
Why did you choose to study in the UK?
I was interested in studying Petroleum Engineering, so I researched universities in different countries beyond New Zealand. The UK stood out because it has many well-known universities offering this programme.
Why did you choose this university and what is your memorable experience at the university?
I was recommended the University of Leeds by One Education. It is part of the Russell Group and has a strong reputation. I had visited the university before making my decision, and I was impressed by its facilities. The lecturers are friendly and approachable, and they respond quickly to emails when I have questions. The university has a single campus located close to the city centre, which makes daily life very convenient, as everything is within walking distance. Leeds is also a safe city with a large student population. One of the highlights of studying here is the opportunity to join exchange programmes. I participated in a six-week summer exchange at Yonsei University in South Korea, where the tuition fees were covered by the university. It was a very valuable experience. During my first year, I also joined a geology field trip, which allowed me to learn outside the classroom and made the experience much more engaging. Although field trips in later years were affected by COVID-19 and moved online, the lecturers still made the virtual experience interesting and enjoyable.
Why did you choose this course?
I have been interested in engineering since I was young, especially through building toys like Lego. As I grew older, I explored different engineering fields and found that I particularly enjoyed chemistry and geology. This led me to choose Petroleum Engineering.
How will your degree help your future career after graduation?
I am currently pursuing a Master’s degree, but this programme has opened up opportunities to work with leading companies such as BP and Shell, as well as organisations in Thailand like PTT and the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning. The University of Leeds is well recognised for its strengths in chemical and petroleum engineering.
What did you like the most about our service and your counsellor?
Before starting university, I studied a Foundation programme for eight months at Bellerbys College Cambridge, which was recommended by One Education. It helped me adjust before entering university. Since I completed the Foundation programme in August and started university in September, the timeline was quite tight. However, One Education helped manage my visa process smoothly, so I was able to prepare with peace of mind. Throughout my studies, whenever I had questions, I could contact her via Line and they always responded quickly. After completing my bachelor’s degree, when I decided to continue to a Master’s degree in the UK, they also provided guidance on choosing universities, accommodation, contacting institutions, and handling my visa. I always felt reassured knowing that I could reach out for support at any time.
