For international students studying at university level in the United Kingdom, you may already be familiar with the term Student Support and the various services available to help students throughout their studies. Today, the team at One Education has put together a guide to some of the most useful student support services available for those planning to study in the UK. Let’s take a look at the support universities provide to help students succeed.
1. Academic Skills and Development
For students who may lack confidence in their academic abilities or wish to strengthen their study skills, most UK universities offer a Study Skills Service. These services are available free of charge and can be accessed through online sessions, one-to-one appointments, small group classes, or workshops. Common topics include Academic Reading, Academic Writing, Critical Writing, Essay Verbs, Group Work, Planning and Structuring Academic Work, and Research Methods.
2. English Language Support
All UK universities provide English language support for international students. One of the most well-known options is the Pre-Sessional English programme, designed for students who need to improve their English before starting their degree. In addition, universities often offer In-Sessional English courses throughout the academic year to help international students develop the academic English skills needed to study confidently and effectively at university level.
3. Health and Wellbeing Support
Student health and wellbeing are a top priority at UK universities, particularly for international students adapting to a new environment. Universities work closely with the NHS (National Health Service) to support students’ physical and mental health needs. Services may include medical treatment, GP consultations, healthcare guidance, counselling services, stress management support, and 24-hour helplines that students can access whenever needed.
4. Accommodation Team
For students planning to live in university accommodation, dedicated accommodation teams are available to provide support throughout the entire process. They can assist with accommodation applications, payments, check-in procedures, maintenance requests, and general housing-related enquiries.
5. Career Service
Every university in the UK has a dedicated careers service that helps students prepare for their future careers. Career advisers can provide guidance on job searching, application preparation, interview skills, CV writing, and information about the UK’s Graduate Route visa, which allows eligible students to remain in the UK for up to two years after graduation to gain valuable work experience.
