In Australia you will hear people talk about ELICOS which stands for ‘English Language Intensive Courses for International Students’ which is a term only used in Australia and also refers to an accredited programme that qualifies for a student visa. There are a whole range of different types of courses available at a wide range of schools and university language centres so there are English courses for every level and need. Some examples may be:
- General English – to improve your general language level and skills and can be from beginner all the way to advanced levels.
- English for Academic Purposes – programmes to help prepare you to study in an Australian school, college or University and usually with more focus on the written English needed for study.
- Exam Preparation course – improving your language skills but with a special focus on examp techniques and practice
- Specialist English courses – usually aimed at a specific industry such as Business English or English for English for the Tourism Industry
- Study Tours – often for small groups and usually combining your language study with other tourist activities.
These courses can last from a week up to a year but the visa you are on will affect how long you can study. You can study English on a Student visa but also on a visitor visa or a working holiday visa for shorter periods of 3 or 4 months. You can also work up to 20 hours a week on the student visa the right visa and this allows you to experience more of Australian life, meet more new friends and help support your studies. Working and studying can also be a good thing to add to your CV for the future.
The fees for these courses are all different and can vary in different locations and from different providers but as a guideline some courses with promotions can start from around $250 per week and can go up to significantly more than this.
