Daylight Saving Time in Australia

Daylight Saving Time in Australia

Many people may have heard of Daylight Saving Time (DST) in Europe. Did you know that Australia also adjusts its clocks during summer and winter? However, each state in Australia changes the time differently. If you’re preparing to study in Australia, let’s check it out together!

Major countries that still use DST include the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. However, some Australian states that used to observe DST have gradually abolished it. Currently, only the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania still observe DST. If you plan to study in Western Australia, Northern Territory, or Queensland, you can rest assured as they no longer change their clocks.

Because Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, below the equator, its DST schedule is opposite to that of Europe. While countries in Europe, the US, and the UK move their clocks forward during the last week of March, some Australian states begin their DST in the first week of October. Similarly, when Northern Hemisphere countries end DST in the last week of October, Australia ends DST in the first week of April instead.

The time of the clock change also differs: Northern Hemisphere countries usually adjust clocks at 2:00 AM, whereas Australia and other Southern Hemisphere countries adjust at 3:00 AM. For example, on the first Sunday of October, at 2:00 AM, the clock jumps forward to 3:00 AM, and on the first Sunday of April, at 3:00 AM, the clock goes back to 2:00 AM. As you can see, the differences are quite significant!

As mentioned earlier, only cities in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania observe DST. Normally, each Australian state already has different time zones relative to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). To avoid confusion, the One Education team has summarized the time differences compared to Thailand’s time (at 9:00 AM) as follows:

State in Australia Standard Time (GMT) Time during Daylight Saving Time (DST)
Australian Capital Territory 12:00 13:00
New South Wales   12:00 13:00
Victoria 12:00  13:00
Tasmania 12:00  13:00
Queensland 12:00  –
South Australia 11:30  12:30
Northern Territory 11:00  –
Western Australia 10:00  –

This year (2025), Australia will end Daylight Saving Time on Sunday, 6 April 2025, and will switch back to Daylight Saving Time again on Sunday, 5 October 2025, at 2:00 AM (AEDT).

We hope this article helps clear up any questions you might have about the time changes in Australia so you can be well-prepared for studying, traveling, or working there.
