Australian food isn’t just BBQ or meat pies as many people think. In reality, it’s incredibly diverse, influenced by cultures from around the world, both traditional local cuisine and dishes brought by immigrants. This blend has created a unique style known as “Modern Australian Cuisine”, which is both exciting and distinctive. In this article, P’Sa will introduce Australian food in a simple way, from popular dishes to dining culture, so if you’re planning to travel or study there, you’ll know what to try!
1. Avocado on Toast

A popular local breakfast dish that Australians love, especially when eating out, is avocado toast. It may be served with sliced or mashed avocado on toast, often topped with feta cheese, sesame seeds, sea salt, and olive oil. Sometimes it’s also served with poached eggs. It’s definitely one of the must-try dishes!
2. Bacon & Egg Roll

In Australia, the classic bacon and eggs breakfast has been adapted into a convenient grab-and-go option. It’s typically served in bread with tomato sauce, resembling a burger. Local cafés across different cities often add their own twist—such as sweet caramelised onions and tomatoes. Some places even incorporate Italian or Vietnamese influences to enhance the flavour of the bacon and egg burger.
3. Meat Pie

Meat pies are another classic and widely popular dish in Australia. They are easy to find at convenience stores and bakeries across the country. The traditional version is filled with beef and served with tomato sauce, but nowadays many places offer a variety of fillings, such as creamy scallop, lamb, or vegetable curry.
4. Salt and Pepper Squid

This dish looks quite similar to deep-fried squid (calamari) you might find in Thailand, but in Australia it’s usually seasoned simply with salt and pepper. It’s an easy-to-find dish available everywhere, from beer gardens, local pubs, seaside food stalls, to restaurants in big cities. It’s actually one of my personal favourites 😊 Every time I visit Australia, I have to get it! Some places also offer variations like fried fish and fried prawns, often served together as a fried seafood platter with chips.
5. Super Fresh Seafood

Since Australia is surrounded by oceans, it’s very easy to find fresh seafood. Australians commonly enjoy fresh oysters paired with wine, as well as a variety of seafood like prawns, shellfish, crabs, and fish, prepared in many different ways. And honestly, if you add a spicy seafood dipping sauce, it would be absolutely amazing! If you’re visiting Sydney, don’t forget to check out Sydney Fish Market for some of the freshest seafood around.
6. Lamington

Lamington is a classic Australian cake. It is a square-shaped butter sponge cake coated with chocolate sauce and desiccated coconut. Some bakeries add extra flavour by filling it with jam or cream. You can easily find it at local bakeries across Australia.
