Australia’s Skilled Occupation List 2026: Degrees That Lead to Real Job Opportunities

Studying abroad often comes with the hope of staying to work in that country, whether for a short period or long term. At the very least, many students want to gain international work experience to enhance their CV or resume. Some even aim to build a long-term career overseas. However, finding a job abroad isn’t as easy as it sounds. Employers need a strong reason to hire an international candidate, especially when they may have to sponsor a visa. So the key question becomes: what makes you stand out enough for them to choose you? This is why Australia has become a popular destination. The country regularly publishes lists of in-demand skilled occupations, making it one of the countries that offers more opportunities for international students compared to many others.

If you already know which careers are in demand in Australia and open to international graduates, you’ll have a better chance of securing a job after graduation. Of course, you’ll still need to prove your abilities and stand out. In this article, the One Education team will introduce the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) 2026, based on information from the Department of Home Affairs, highlighting careers that are currently in demand in Australia.

The Skilled Occupation List (SOL) refers to the official list of skilled occupations published by the Australian Government, identifying jobs that are currently experiencing skill shortages. These occupations are eligible for skilled migration visas and pathways to Permanent Residency (PR). The lists include MLTSSL, STSOL, ROL, and CSOL, which are used to determine which occupations are eligible for different visa subclasses. In simple terms, these lists act as a “set of eligibility criteria”, defining which occupations can participate in the skilled migration process and under what conditions.

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189) is a permanent residency (PR) visa for skilled workers whose occupations are in demand in Australia. Visa holders can live and work permanently anywhere in Australia without needing sponsorship from an employer or a state government. Applicants must submit an application, achieve a minimum of 65 points, and receive an invitation to apply before they can proceed with the visa application.

That said, getting a job depends on many factors. It’s not guaranteed that everyone who studies in one of the in-demand fields will automatically secure a job. To be employed, you will still need to meet several requirements, such as English language proficiency, relevant experience, and your academic qualifications at the time. In addition, you must also pass a skills assessment. One Education would like to emphasise that there are multiple factors involved, it’s not just about choosing a course based on shortage occupations. However, for those who are interested in working in Australia, this is another pathway that can increase your chances of employment after graduation, as long as your occupation is listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
