University of Sheffield

The University of Sheffield began as a merger of three educational institutions in Sheffield – the Sheffield School of Medicine founded in 1828, Firth College founded in 1879, and the Sheffield Technical School founded in 1884. 

In 1905, they merged to become one institution and adopted the name The University of Sheffield, making the University’s medical faculty the oldest in the UK. The University is renowned for its academic and research excellence on a global scale, with 92% of research being classified as world-leading, internationally excellent, or internationally recognized. 

It is ranked 16th in the UK and 96th in the world by QS World University Rankings 2023. The University of Sheffield has over 30,000 students, including international students from over 140 countries, which contributes to its social and cultural diversity. It has been ranked among the Top 50 Most International Universities in the world by Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022. 

Additionally, the University has been awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize five times in the categories of Humanities, Social Science & Law, Environmental, Pioneering Ageing Research, Manufacturing, and Translational Neuroscience in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2007, and 2019, respectively. 

Location 

The University of Sheffield is located in the city of Sheffield, situated in the central part of England. Sheffield is a city known for its abundance of trees, green areas, and public parks. It is also in close proximity to the Peak District National Park, which has earned Sheffield the recognition of being a Green City in the United Kingdom and Europe. 

Sheffield is the fifth largest city in the United Kingdom and is considered one of the safest cities in the country. Additionally, it offers a relatively low cost of living (according to the NatWest student living index 2019). Moreover, Sheffield is renowned for its vibrant arts and music scenes. 

Students can easily travel from Sheffield to other major cities in the north and other parts of the country by train.

If you are traveling from Thailand, you can fly to London Heathrow Airport or Manchester International Airport and continue your journey to Sheffield by train, which takes approximately 1 hour.

The University of Sheffield has two campuses, which are the Western Bank Campus (the main campus of the university) and St George’s Campus.

It provides reading areas and well-equipped labs with modern tools and technology, such as Aerospace Simulation, Analytics Laboratory, Lego Mindstorm Robots, Bioengineering Bacterial Laboratory, and Thermodynamics & Mechanics Laboratory, among others. 

  • The Information Commons 
    This learning space is open 24/7 and offers rooms for group work with boards, private reading zones, and a collection of over 120,000 books. Students also have the option to borrow laptops. 
  • Students’ Union 

The university’s Students’ Union provides a wide range of student clubs and activities catering to diverse interests. These include sports clubs, music clubs, children’s clubs, cooking and baking clubs, cardio exercise clubs, animal lovers’ clubs, vegan clubs, archery clubs, Jui Jitsu clubs, Thai boxing clubs, hiking clubs, scuba diving clubs, and many more.

The University of Sheffield International College offers foundational courses for international students who aspire to pursue bachelor’s and postgraduate degrees at the University of Sheffield in collaboration with INTO, the pathway provider.
