The University of Sheffield began as a merger of three educational institutions in Sheffield – the Sheffield School of Medicine founded in 1828, Firth College founded in 1879, and the Sheffield Technical School founded in 1884. 

In 1905, they merged to become one institution and adopted the name The University of Sheffield, making the University’s medical faculty the oldest in the UK.
