St.George’s University of London
St George’s Hospital first opened in 1733 at Lanesborough House at Hyde Park Corner. From the beginning, in 1756, the famous anatomist and surgeon John Hunter began teaching at St George’s Hospital. Hunter is often referred to as the “Father of Modern Surgery” and is credited with transforming surgery into a medical practice based on evidence. In 2000, St George’s Medical School became the first institution in the UK to launch the MBBS Graduate Entry Programme, a four-year fast-track medical degree course open to graduates from all disciplines. On St George’s Day in 2005, the school officially changed its name to ‘St George’s, University of London’. In 2015, St George’s appointed its first female Principal, Professor Jenny Higham, a renowned obstetrician and gynaecologist who has held several leadership roles in academia and is also the Chair of the Medical Schools Council.
