Course: MA Romantic and Victorian Literary Studies
Institution: Durham University
Please tell us about yourself – what course and institute did you study before going to the UK?
Before coming to the UK, I studied English at the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University.
Why did you choose to study in the UK?
I always knew that if I were to study abroad, it would have to be in the UK. The main reason is that I wanted to study English literature, and I felt that studying in the country where these works were originally created would offer more than just academic knowledge. It allows you to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere as well.
Another reason, which applies to all fields of study, is that the UK education system encourages students to critically engage with the materials and research they read. I believe this is an essential skill for both further study and professional work. Here, studying is often described as “reading” because it truly involves extensive reading and critical thinking.
Why did you choose this university and what is your memorable experience at the university?
I chose Durham University because of its strong reputation in Humanities, although it is also well regarded in other fields. Once I received the offer, I did not consider any other options.
Durham is becoming more well known among Thai students, although some may still not be familiar with it. However, it is a university that is highly regarded and widely chosen by UK students.
Why did you choose this course?
I chose the MA Romantic and Victorian Literary Studies programme primarily because of my passion for the subject. Since I had the opportunity to study abroad, I wanted to choose something I truly enjoy. My background is already in this field, and I hope to pursue a career related to writing, literature, or academia in the future.
I would also like to see the literary and publishing scene in Thailand become as vibrant as it is in the UK. While Humanities are sometimes seen as less practical compared to other fields, I believe that regardless of how the world changes, people will always engage with literature, films, and the arts. These are deeply connected to human life, and I hope to see more spaces for this in Thailand.
How will your degree help your future career after graduation?
I plan to work in writing, translation, or academia related to literature. The teaching approach here focuses heavily on reading theory and research, questioning ideas, and critically engaging with texts. You are not expected to agree with everything, but rather to evaluate how different arguments support or challenge your own.
I believe this is a skill that will stay with me for life, regardless of the career path I choose. In my field, literary theory in the Western world continues to evolve rapidly, with new ideas constantly emerging. Studying here has also given me opportunities to attend many academic seminars, often free of charge.
These experiences have shown me how deeply and broadly academics, writers, and even general readers engage with ideas. It is a serious yet very open and welcoming environment. This foundation will be incredibly useful if I pursue writing or translation, as I will already have the theoretical background. As a bonus, it has also made watching series much more enjoyable, since many of them reference literary works and theories.
What did you like the most about our service and your counsellor?
I started my journey during a time when COVID-19 was still quite severe, and Thailand was on the Red List. I had many concerns, such as whether I would be able to travel on time or at all. I had already deferred my studies for a year, so I did not want to delay any further.
I ended up asking P’Ploy from One Education questions almost every day. She provided very detailed advice each time and regularly contacted the university on my behalf whenever I had concerns. I was truly touched by how much effort she put into supporting me.
Even after I arrived, I could still reach out to her for advice. She did not just provide guidance, but also gave me a great sense of reassurance throughout the process. I was genuinely very impressed.
