Public Transportation in Australia: What You Need to Know

Public Transport in Australia

When you study in Australia, it’s important to understand how to get around – public transportation is widely used and very convenient. Unlike relying solely on walking, most people use trains, buses, ferries, and light rail (trams).

Here are some key points:

  • Reliable Schedule: Transit systems clearly show timetables, so you can plan appointments or travel times quite accurately.
  • Major Transport Modes: The most commonly used public transport options include:
    • Train
    • Bus
    • Ferry
    • Light Rail (Trams)
  • Cleanliness & Order: The public transport in Australian cities is notably clean, and people generally follow rules when using shared public facilities.
  • Smart Card Systems: Each city usually has its own fare card, but many cities support a single card usable across different types of transport.
  • Student Discounts: As an international student, you may be eligible for a student concession card, which provides discounted fares.

Using a transport card is much more convenient than carrying cash or coins:

  • Tap in and tap out – it’s fast and simple.
  • You can top up your card online via a mobile app. The app lets you check your balance, check schedules, reload money, and get real-time updates (for example, when services are delayed or canceled).
  • You can also use the app to locate nearby bus stops, train stations, ferry terminals, or tram stops.

Let’s take a look at the transport cards used in different Australian cities:

  • Melbourne – myki
    • Valid for: Train, tram, and bus
  • Sydney – Opal Card

If you don’t want to take the train, bus, ferry, or tram, you can also use cabs or taxis. Just keep in mind that fares are calculated based on distance.
