How to Overcome Homesick While Studying Abroad

having a homesickness - One Education

Studying abroad is one of the most exciting experiences in life. But believe it or not, the hardest part for many students is not academics or language barriers, it’s the feeling of homesickness. Many people feel fine on their first day, and the first week is still enjoyable. But once weeks two to four begin, loneliness can slowly creep in without you even realising it. Walking back to a quiet room, having no one to speak Thai with, eating meals alone, and opening your phone only to feel like you want to go home. If you are currently going through this phase, know that it is completely normal. In this article, the team at One Education will share tips to help you get through it and feel less alone while studying abroad.

Homesickness is the feeling of missing a sense of familiarity, not just a place. It is when you miss your family, friends, the Thai language, food, or even the daily routines you used to have. Many people mistakenly think, “I shouldn’t have come here,” but in reality, it is simply a period of emotional and mental adjustment. Most international students around the world go through this phase at some point.

Having Homesickness

Life changes 180 degrees From having everything readily available, you suddenly have to do everything on your own, doing laundry, cooking, managing your time, and solving problems independently. It can feel like growing up at fast speed.

An unfamiliar kind of silence In Thailand, we are rarely truly alone. But when studying abroad, especially at the beginning, the silence can feel overwhelming and very loud in your thoughts.

Using English all day Even if you can speak English well, thinking and communicating in English all day is exhausting. It drains your energy, and some days you may not feel like talking to anyone at all.

You haven’t found your people yet New friends may not feel close yet, and you may not have found your safe space. This can make it feel as though no one truly understands you.

1. Accept that you miss home: Don’t resist or suppress your feelings, because the more you suppress them, the heavier they become. Try telling yourself honestly, “It’s okay, I miss home, and that’s completely normal.”

2. Create a routine to give your life structure: Having no daily structure can make your thoughts feel scattered. Try planning a simple routine, such as attending classes or studying in the morning, doing assignments or looking for a part-time job in the afternoon, and exercising or cooking in the evening. A predictable rhythm can help you feel much more grounded.

3. Find your own safe space: It could be your favourite corner in your room, a café near your accommodation, or the library. Simply having a place where you feel comfortable can help calm your mind significantly.

4. Stay in touch with family and friends in moderation: Talking to loved ones helps a lot, but doing it too often can sometimes make homesickness stronger. Try speaking 2–3 times per week and share positive experiences too, not only venting.

5. Cook Thai food: Believe it or not, even the smell of Thai food can be emotionally comforting. It can instantly feel like being back home. Try finding an Asian supermarket near your accommodation.

6. Be brave enough to speak, make mistakes, and start conversations: Don’t wait until your English feels perfect before talking, that moment may never come. It’s okay to make mistakes or use imperfect grammar. What matters is communication.

7. Join university activities: Activities are the fastest way to make friends. Try joining clubs, attending orientation sessions, or participating in university events. The more you join, the higher your chances of meeting people with similar vibes.

8. Go out and explore the city: Don’t let your world consist only of your bedroom and university. Take walks, travel to nearby cities by train, or discover new cafés. You’ll start to feel that life becomes more enjoyable and exciting.

9. Take care of your body and mind: Get enough sleep, eat well, and exercise regularly. Good physical and mental health influence your mood more than you might expect.

10. Don’t compare yourself to others: Some people may look very happy, but they may have already gone through the same phase you are experiencing. Everyone has their own timeline.

11. Ask for help if it feels overwhelming: Every university provides Student Support services for international students. Seeking support can help you manage stress and loneliness early, making it easier to adjust to your new environment.

Homesickness is a part of growing up. Missing home does not mean you are not suited to studying abroad. It simply means you have a home worth missing, that you are growing, and that you are learning how to be with yourself. Believe that before long, you will start to have a favourite café, a new group of friends, and a life that feels more settled. One day, you may look back and think, “How did I get through that time? …But I did quite well, didn’t I?”

If you are preparing to study abroad or are already overseas and feeling lonely, please know that you are not alone. This period will eventually become one of the moments in life that you are most proud of.
