Freshers’ Week UK: What to Expect in Your First Week at University

Fresher Week - One Education

Many students are probably familiar with the concept of freshman orientation, which is the official welcome programme for new students held before classes begin. In the UK, every university organises this type of event, though it may be called by different names such as Fresher Week, Orientation Week, Induction Week, or International Welcome Week. Despite the different names, they all share the same purpose. These activities usually take place about one week before the start of term, or on the dates specified in your enrolment documents. You can check the exact schedule through your university’s Academic Term Dates.

So, what kind of activities should students take part in during Fresher Week? Let’s take a look.

City Tour or Campus Tour - Freshers’ Week UK

Exploring the city around you, such as your accommodation area, nearby restaurants, convenience stores, and routes to campus, is one of the first things you should do after arriving. Most students arrive at their accommodation over the weekend (Saturday or Sunday) to give themselves time to adjust to the new environment, recover from jet lag, and prepare essentials like food and daily necessities. Taking time to explore the city is a great way to prepare for daily life throughout the academic year. It also helps you understand the public transport system and plan your journey to university, ensuring you can get to campus on time and avoid getting lost on your first day.

Student Enrolment - Freshers’ Week UK

This includes registering for your courses to receive your class timetable and course outline through the university system. You will also need to complete identity verification, both online and in person at the university, take a photo for your Student ID card, and have your important personal documents checked and verified.

Registering with a healthcare provider & understanding the UK Healthcare System - Freshers’ Week UK

All students are eligible to access public healthcare services in the UK, as they have already paid the International Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of their visa application. Universities will guide students through the process of registering with a GP (General Practitioner) via an online system. This registration allows you to access medical services when needed. In case of illness or emergencies, you’ll know which healthcare facility is closest and most convenient for you. Some universities also have an on-campus healthcare centre, which students can choose to register with as well.

Requesting a bank account letter from the university - Freshers’ Week UK

All students can open a bank account in the UK, but before applying, you must first complete your student enrolment so your details are registered in the university system. Once that’s done, you can submit a request through the university system to obtain a bank letter, which is required to open a student bank account. The process of opening a bank account in the UK usually takes around 3–4 weeks, which is slightly slower than in Thailand. Therefore, One Education recommends that students start this process as soon as possible during Fresher Week.

Tuition Fee Payment - Freshers’ Week UK

After completing your enrolment, you can pay your tuition fees during the first week of term at the university. You may choose to pay the full amount (100% upfront) or split the payment into 50/50 across Semester 1 and Semester 2. There are several payment methods available, including credit card, international bank transfer, Flywire, Western Union, or bank draft payable to the university. Most universities in the UK do not accept cash payments. It’s recommended that students check with their university in advance to confirm the most convenient payment method before travelling.

Academic Briefings & Introduction to International Student Support - Freshers’ Week UK

During this activity, students will meet university staff and lecturers from their faculty, as well as teams responsible for different support services. If you have any concerns about academics, daily life, or extracurricular activities, you can reach out for guidance and support. You’ll also learn about opportunities beyond the classroom, such as student clubs, societies, and programmes for both local and international students.

Meeting New Friends & Adjusting to Culture Shock - Freshers’ Week UK

In addition to preparing for academics and daily life, this is also a great time to meet new friends and join activities together. You’ll get the chance to learn about different cultures from international students, while adjusting to a new environment. The friends you meet early on, whether from your accommodation or classes, can support each other, helping make your student life smoother and more enjoyable throughout your studies.
