Highlights in Oxford

University Church of St. Mary the Virgin

A beloved church at the university, dating back to the Anglo-Saxon period, marking the early medieval history of England. It is beautifully decorated with a viewing point at the top, and still bears bullet marks from the English Civil War.

Christ Church Cathedral

A cathedral built in 1546, which served as a royal base during the English Civil War. It is also the inspiration and filming location for Harry Potter, particularly the dining hall.

Ashmolean Museum

was the first museum in England to be open to the public and is one of the four most important university museums in Oxford.

Radcliffe Square

The central square in Oxford, surrounded by key university buildings and libraries, including the Bodleian Library, the second largest library in England and home to one of the largest collections of rare books in Europe, the Radcliffe Camera, a round building used as a reading room, and the Divinity School.

Blenheim Palace

Known as the ‘Palace of the People,’ it was built to honor the 1st Duke of Marlborough (John Churchill) for his victory in the war against France. It is also the birthplace of former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Today, visitors can explore the history of the Spencer-Churchill family and view exhibitions and memorabilia.

Oxford Botanic Gardens & Arboretum

The oldest botanical garden in the UK and one of the oldest plant research gardens in the world. Known as an urban oasis, it houses over 5,000 plant species across its Glasshouses, Walled Garden, Lower Garden, and Herbarium Room, as well as a 130-acre arboretum home to rare and endangered plant species.

Oxford Castle & Prison

A castle with a history of over 950 years, built by William the Conqueror, the first Norman king of England. It was later turned into a prison in the 19th century. Today, it has been repurposed as a historical site, a restaurant, hotel, and offers a viewing point from St George’s Tower, the oldest building in Oxford.

Covered Market

A historic market in the heart of Oxford, operating since 1770. It offers a variety of goods, including fresh produce, artisanal bread and cheese made without machines, handcrafted jewelry, clothes, and other craft items.
