Newcastle Upon Tyne, or commonly referred to as Newcastle, is located in the northeast of England. The city of Newcastle is situated on the banks of the River Tyne, which is the origin of the name “Newcastle Upon Tyne.” Although initially named Pons Aelius, it was changed to Newcastle in 1080 after the construction of a castle by King Robert II. The city was once a center for wool trade and later became one of the country’s leading coal mining areas in the 16th century. During the 16th century, Newcastle became known as a shipbuilding city. Newcastle was once a major global hub for shipbuilding, but today that industry has declined, and the city has transformed into an important cultural center of the country.

Attractions in Newcastle

The Tyne Bridges

The Tyne Bridge is the most famous and iconic of the seven bridges that cross the River Tyne in the central part of the city, often referred to as NewcastleGateshead Quayside. The Tyne Bridge was designed by the engineering firm Mott, Hay and Anderson and built by Dorman Long and Co. from Middlesbrough. At the time of its construction, the Tyne Bridge was the longest single-span bridge in the world and was officially opened on October 10, 1928, by King George V. The bridge’s towers were built from Cornish granite and were originally designed as warehouses with five stories.

Newcastle Castle

Newcastle Castle is a grim reminder of royal authority, where armies gathered and criminals were imprisoned and executed. It is the birthplace of Newcastle and the reason behind its name. The castle once protected important river crossings and controlled access to the region of Glamorgan when much of the country was under the control of native Welsh people. The original castle was likely a simple earthwork, with the remains standing today dating from the 1180s, after renovations. At that time, the castle was under the control of Henry II, and this royal connection may explain why it was so well-constructed.

The Old City Chares

The Old City Chares are located to the east of the Tyne Bridge, in one of the oldest parts of Newcastle. This area is known for its well-preserved medieval alleyways and walking paths, including Breakneck Stairs, Long Stairs, and Castle Stairs. The Old City Chares are narrow, winding lanes that form part of the medieval layout of Newcastle Upon Tyne.
