Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is the second-largest city in Scotland and the third-largest financial center in the UK, after London and Glasgow. The city is located on the east coast of Scotland, on the southern bank of the Firth of Forth (the estuary that opens into the North Sea). The famous Edinburgh Castle, known to everyone, sits atop a volcanic rock. While most cities expanded and developed heavy industries during the Industrial Revolution, the expansion in the Forth region occurred at Leith, leaving Edinburgh largely untouched and preserved. As a result, the history of Edinburgh has been well preserved, and the city was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh is divided into two parts: the Old Town and the New Town. The New Town developed beyond the old city walls during a time of social reform and prosperity. Additionally, Edinburgh is known as a “Child Friendly City” because it offers numerous attractions suitable for children, such as museums, zoos, and many other child-friendly places.

Attractions in Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle

Edinburgh Castle is located at the top of the Royal Mile on Castle Rock. It is the most visited tourist attraction in Scotland and the most iconic building in the city. Sitting atop an extinct volcano, the castle and its esplanade offer stunning views. Edinburgh Castle is filled with stories from its time as a military fortress, royal residence, and war prison. The castle also houses the Honours of Scotland, the famous 15th-century Mons Meg cannon, the One o'Clock Gun, and the National War Museum of Scotland.

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is just a 20-minute walk from the city center. With a collection of over 100,000 plant species and more than 70 acres of beautiful green space, it is a place that can be visited for free (except for some special events). Highlights include the Chinese Hillside, the world-famous Rock Garden, and the giant Redwood trees. The garden has a history of over 350 years and offers various activities, such as workshops or courses, as well as cafes serving coffee and cake.

Palace of Holyroodhouse

The Palace of Holyroodhouse is located at the foot of the Royal Mile. It is the official residence of the King in Scotland and home to Scottish royal history. The palace is open for visits throughout the year and is situated at the end of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh.

Scott Monument

The Scott Monument is one of the largest monuments in the world dedicated to a writer. This monument was built to commemorate Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott. Inspired by Gothic architecture, it was constructed in 1840 and is one of the most prominent landmarks in Edinburgh. It is one of the first sights that visitors will see when arriving in the city by train, with the nearby station named 'Waverley' after Scott's series of novels. Not for the faint-hearted, the climb to the top of the monument involves 221 steps, but once at the viewing platform, the views are absolutely stunning.
