Durham Cathedral

Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, Durham Cathedral is a stunning example of Norman architecture and was the largest of its kind in its time. The cathedral is located along the River Wear and is near Durham Castle. It has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also one of the filming locations for the Harry Potter films.

Durham Castle

A must-see landmark in Durham, Durham Castle was built in the 11th century and features Norman-style architecture. It sits on a hill above the River Wear. Originally a military stronghold, the castle was later restored and has been used for religious ceremonies ever since. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Durham Market Square

This shopping hub is at the heart of Durham and is home to the Guildhall, the St Nicholas Monument, and a statue of Neptune. There are many restaurants, cafes, and shops around the square.

Oriental Museum

Part of Durham University, the Oriental Museum houses a collection of over 23,500 objects, including ancient artifacts, artwork, and crafts from China, Egypt, Korea, India, and Japan. The museum is free to the public.

The Bowes Museum

At first glance, you might think this is a castle, but it's actually a museum designed to resemble a French château. The museum features art collections, paintings, ceramics, textiles, and historically significant objects.

Finchale Priory

An ancient priory built in the 13th century, located on the River Wear, about 4 miles from the center of Durham. It was once a retreat for monks during the summer months, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Today, only the ruins remain for visitors to explore.

Brancepeth Castle

One of the oldest medieval castles in the northeast, Brancepeth Castle was built over 400 years ago. It was once a fortress for the Neville family and is now a museum open to the public. It also hosts events such as craft fairs, historic talks, and Shakespearean plays.
