Before applying, students should start by researching programmes and universities that match their interests. Here are 5 key factors to consider:

1. Set your purpose

First, define your goal. Think about why you want to study a Master’s degree and what you plan to do after graduation. Consider whether the programme will help you achieve your goals. In addition to the course itself, students should also consider the city where the university is located, including the social environment, lifestyle, transportation, accommodation, cost of living, and opportunities for part-time work, as you will spend around one year living there.

2. Prepare your documents and do your research

Once you have decided to study in the UK, do not waste time trying to figure everything out alone. If your score does not meet the requirement, you will still have time to retake the test within the intake timeline. However, if you have taken the test multiple times and still do not meet the required score, you should consider applying for the university’s Pre-sessional English course as soon as possible. These courses also have their own entry requirements and intake periods. At this stage, you should already decide which university you want to attend and avoid delaying your decision. If you know which university is your top choice, you should accept the offer immediately, rather than waiting to see responses from all universities, especially if the others are not your preferred options. Delaying in this way may cause you to miss the deadline for your top-choice university. Therefore, once you are certain, you should accept the offer and pay the deposit so you can proceed with the next steps.

4. Choose accommodation and prepare for your visa

Accommodation is nothing to worry about. Students whose IELTS scores do not meet the requirement may need to attend a Pre-sessional English course before the main programme begins. Required documents for application

Students need to prepare the following documents:

1. Transcript and Degree Certificate (in English)

Final-year students can apply using results up to the first semester of their final year, along with a Student Status Letter

2. Proof of English proficiency (if available)

If you do not yet have IELTS results, you can still apply first. If accepted, the university will issue a conditional offer requiring you to submit your English score before the deadline

3. Copy of passport

Must be valid at the time of application and should ideally cover your study period

4. IELTS results

Must be valid. Required scores vary by programme and university

5. Letters of Recommendation

Recent graduates should provide at least 2 academic references. Applicants with 2 or more years of work experience may provide 1 academic and 1 professional reference

6. Resume / CV

Should include education, work experience, personal details, and relevant skills. No photo or design is required

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. When should I apply to study in the UK?

For applications to the September 2027 intake, UK universities typically open applications one year in advance, starting from around September 2026. Some highly competitive programmes may close between April and June, or even earlier if places are filled. Master’s applications in the UK operate on a First Come, First Served basis, meaning earlier applications are considered first. If you apply late, even if you meet the entry requirements, you may not receive an offer if the programme is already full.

2. Which IELTS test should I take? What is the difference between Academic IELTS and Academic for UKVI?

UK universities accept both Academic IELTS and Academic IELTS for UKVI. The format is the same. The difference is that IELTS for UKVI is approved by the UK Home Office. If your score does not meet university requirements, this version allows you to study a Pre-sessional English course without retaking the test. Regular Academic IELTS cannot be used for this purpose.
