If you’re heading to Australia, how prepared are you? Once your visa is ready, besides packing clothes, essentials, and important travel documents, there’s one more thing you shouldn’t overlook, the mobile applications you’ll need for daily life in Australia. To help you get ready, One Education has put together a list of five essential apps every student should download before flying to study in Australia.
1. myki / Opal / Translink (Depending on a City)

When living abroad, one clear difference compared to Thailand is public transportation. In Australia, as in many other countries, people are less likely to drive everywhere and instead rely heavily on public transport. That’s why having public transport apps is quite essential. These apps allow you to check real-time schedules for buses, trains, and trams. You can top up your balance online, check your remaining credit, and manage payments directly through the app. They also provide live service updates, including cancellations, timetable changes, or delays. In addition, you can see estimated arrival times and locate the nearest bus stops, train stations, ferry terminals, or tram stops. Each city uses different applications. For example, Melbourne uses myki, Sydney uses Opal, and Brisbane uses Translink.
2. Uber / DiDi / OLA

If you prefer not to take buses, trains, or trams, you can use Uber, DiDi, or OLA, similar to using GrabTaxi in Thailand. In Australia, these three companies are the main ride-hailing services that locals commonly use. Uber is the most well-known and tends to be the most expensive among the three. The newer options, DiDi and OLA, are generally cheaper than Uber. It’s a good idea to compare prices on each app before booking a ride. Many Thai students have mentioned that sometimes the drivers are actually the same people working across different platforms, almost like taking on extra jobs. So overall, the reliability is quite similar, it often just comes down to price.

3. Uber Eats / DoorDash / Menulog

Food lovers, don’t miss this, download these three popular food delivery apps: Uber Eats, DoorDash and Menulog. If you don’t like queuing at restaurants, waiting for a table, or heading out, especially when the weather isn’t great, food delivery apps are a must-have. There are often special deals that can even be cheaper than dining in. In Thailand, it’s similar to using Grab or LINE MAN. These apps are especially helpful when you’ve just arrived in Australia, as you may not be familiar with local restaurants or how to order yet. Browsing and ordering through an app from your accommodation can be a real lifesaver during your first few weeks.
4. Zoom / Google Meet / Microsoft Teams

Let’s talk about study essentials. These days, online classes are unavoidable, whether due to unexpected situations or group meetings for assignments. That’s why you should have Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams installed on your mobile phone or laptop. You can choose based on what your lecturers or classmates use. However, from experience, lecturers might use one platform while friends use another, so it’s often easier to download all three to avoid last-minute hassle. These three applications are widely used across Australian universities for online learning. Key features include video conferencing, screen sharing, file sharing, and chat functions. They allow real-time communication, making it easy for students and lecturers to interact and respond quickly during classes or group discussions.
5. SEEK / Indeed

A very important app, absolutely essential, for anyone looking for a job in Australia is SEEK or Indeed . These platforms list a wide range of job opportunities across all industries. LinkedIn is still useful as well, but SEEK and Indeed are particularly popular among people living in Australia. Whether you’re searching for a part-time job during your studies or a full-time role after applying for a post-study work visa, these apps can be extremely helpful. Instead of only walking into companies to apply in person, submitting your CV or resume through these applications is much easier, more convenient, and saves a lot of time, especially when you’re applying to multiple positions at once.
