The North-East region has some very popular Universities grouped in a couple of areas, those in or near the city of Newcastle and those located throughout the county of Yorkshire.

Within the city of Newcastle are two University neighbours, in places they are separated by just a few buildings. This fantastic city hosts Newcastle University (141 in QS World rankings, 2021) and Northumbria University (a University since 1992 and was considered the best Young University in the UK, Times 2020). A short train ride away, students are often inspired by the wonderful Durham University (ranked 6th in the UK, Times 2021)

Moving across the region to the UK’s largest county – Yorkshire – students are spoilt for choice with a number of the country’s top Universities in ranking and reputation. Russell group Universities include the University of Leeds, University of York, University of Sheffield. The popular student city of Sheffield also hosts Sheffield Hallam University.

Attractions in North-East England

Newcastle

The economic and cultural capital of the northeast of England, the city sits beside the River Tyne and the iconic bridges which cross it. The city centre is a mix of Victorian buildings and streets, as well as several large shopping centres and entertainment facilities. Visit the Quayside District for a flavour of the local life.

North York Moors National Park

Angel of the North

One of the most popular pieces of public art in England, The Angel of the North is Britain's largest sculpture, 20m high and has a 54m wing span.

Durham

For those searching for the quintessentially British experience, Durham has it all. Winding cobbled streets, impressive cathedrals, historic castles, and lots of wonderfully traditional pubs! The University brings a youthful side to this quaint city.

Gateway to Scotland

The train ride from Newcastle to Edinburgh is a little over one hour in duration. Many visitors in the North-East England will make the short journey to the capital, a perfect weekend trip.

York

A medieval city of steeped in history and surrounded by 13th-century walls, located the town centres sits one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world York Minister. This is a tourist-oriented city – with plenty of museums, cafes, restaurants, and traditional pubs.
